In Beijing, I was constantly seeing contrasts, old
buildings next to new, authentic next to simulation. Out of the
arrangements of bricks and workers with picks and shovels, white cubes
emerged, whole new districts dedicated to art production. I felt a sense
of spontaneity; it required a certain special attitude just to navigate
the streets. It was amazing that despite the density of traffic and
pedestrians, despite the apparent chaos, a certain order emerged. If my
work was influenced by the experience, it was by the sense of co-existent
layers. By this I mean the extreme contrast of different worlds next to
each other.
